Kilpatricks to be honored at SUNY Fredonia event

Professor Barry and Cathe Kilpatrick

Alumni, colleagues, friends, former students and family are invited to join the State University of New York at Fredonia School of Music on Saturday, April 27, for events honoring Professor Barry and Cathe Kilpatrick, and their Fredonia legacy.

School of Music Professor and Assistant Director Barry Kilpatrick has been a beloved fixture in Mason Hall for 45 years and is retiring. Professor Kilpatrick, head of the brass area, has been a member of the faculty in the School of Music since 1979, teaching studio euphonium and trombone, Music Education courses in brass pedagogy and trombone, and music criticism. Former principal trombonist of the Erie Philharmonic, Erie Chamber Orchestra, and Western New York Chamber Orchestra, his recording “American Music for Euphonium” was praised in brass journals. He has been a music critic for “American Record Guide” for 32 years, reviewing more than 2,200 recordings, and is the recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2010) and the Heart of Fredonia Award (2019). Professor Kilpatrick has devoted much time and attention in recent years to assisting international music students. Four trips to China and South Korea for seminars and recruitment have helped to increase their numbers.

Cathe is a former longtime member of the professional staff in the university’s Sponsored Programs office, and most recently served for several years as Audition Coordinator for the School of Music.
