Author publishes third book on Friday
Local author Rebecca Cuthbert’s third book, “Self-Made Monsters,” will make its debut on Friday, from Alien Buddha Press. A hybrid collection of feminist horror, “Self-Made Monsters,” contains stories and poems featuring women as villains and victims, as bystanders and enablers, exploring the quiet moments of magic and horror in women’s lives.
Laurel Hightower, Bram Stoker-nominated author of “Below, Day of the Door,” and more, introduces the collection. She says, “With the voice and heart of a poet, Cuthbert pulls the reader in with deft brushstrokes of prose. Nothing is wasted — her stories are crafted with an economy of words, the swift creation of ambiance and atmosphere, such as in ‘With Her,’ a chilling tale that perfectly captures the feeling of a Halloween night, or ‘Lake Eerie Omen’ placing you at the water’s edge, feeling the dread of knowing what’s coming across the surface without hope of avoidance.”
Another reviewer, Carol Gyzander, Bram Stoker-nominated editor of “Discontinue if Death Ensues,” says “Rebecca Cuthbert’s “Self-Made Monsters,” is a staggering work that stabs deep in the heart, alternately drawing you in with a quiet voice and then exploding in your brain. The depth of feeling for a woman’s perceived place in the world–and her defiance of it–resounds through the entire collection, but nowhere stronger than in the story, ’Falling to Pieces.’ This is an author to watch and seek out.”
“Self-Made Monsters,” will be available for purchase on Amazon as of Friday. A local launch party will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Downtown Brew on Water Street in Fredonia. The public is welcome to attend. There will be a brief reading, book sales and signing, door prize raffles, and cookies.
Cuthbert is the author of “In Memory of Exoskeletons,” a poetry collection, and “Creep This Way: How To Become a Horror Writer with 24 Tips To Get You Ghouling.”
Her first children’s book, “Down in the Dark Deep Where The Puddlers Dwell,” will debut Nov. 12. In addition to the “Self-Made Monsters,” book launch, interested readers can catch Cuthbert at the Nightscape Horror Festival Oct. 12 in Jamestown.
