‘Rental Family’ to be shown at Opera House

“Rental Family,” starring Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser, will be shown Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of “Rental Family,” starring Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser, on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday night screening will be shown with captions visible on the screen.

In modern-day Tokyo, an American actor (Brendan Fraser) struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection.

RogertEbert.com calls the film “a beautiful and contemplative film, with lovely messaging and a couple of sly twists.” The Sydney Morning Herald calls it “a sweet film with a touching ending.” The Chicago Tribune says “as an actor, Fraser’s second act has been a sight to behold, and he is the emotional anchor of this wonderfully life-affirming and quietly resonant film about the importance of being together.” Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, suggestive material, and some strong language, “Rental Family” runs one hour, 45 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Bank.
