Opera House to screen Oscar-nominated ‘Hamnet’

“Hamnet” tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of Oscar front-runner “Hamnet,” on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday night screening will be shown with captions visible on the screen.

Nominated for eight Oscars including for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Jessie Buckley, “Hamnet” tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

The Arizona Republic calls the film “devastating and magnetic and most of all brilliant. Don’t miss it.” RogerEbert.com calls it “so meticulously composed, colorful, and detailed, that it almost feels like a romantic fairytale.” TheWrap calls it “a technical, artistic, intellectual, and emotional feast,” and adds that “Buckley is nothing less than magical. She can singlehandedly break your heart with one glance or gesture and is, put simply, brilliant.” Rolling Stone says “‘Hamnet’ has managed to make the lines ‘goodnight, sweet prince’ somehow sting more than ever, but it leaves you in a state of emotional bliss.” Rated PG-13, “Hamnet” runs two hours, five minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.
