Gowanda Middle School celebrates 50 years of musicals

Gowanda Middle School will present Seussical Jr. on the Gowanda Central School Auditorium stage on Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.

This spring, Gowanda Middle School proudly celebrates the 50th anniversary of its middle school musical program, a tradition that has shaped generations of students and become a cornerstone of the school community.

A major part of that legacy was built by longtime music teacher Mrs. Cindy Ripley, who directed the program from 1977 to 2006. During her nearly 30-year tenure, Mrs. Ripley helped establish the musical as an annual highlight and gave countless students their first experience on stage. She was also part of musical theater history, as Gowanda was chosen to premiere Annie Jr., the very first Broadway Junior show, which is now celebrating its own 30th anniversary. Over 100,000-plus Broadway Junior shows have been performed worldwide since then, and it is all thanks to the pilot production and Mrs. Ripley.

In 2007, Adam Bett assumed leadership of the program, continuing the proud tradition established by his mentor, Cindy Ripley. Since then, the musical has remained a cornerstone of the middle school experience, offering students far more than a chance to perform. Through their work on stage and behind the scenes, students build confidence, develop teamwork, and learn responsibility — values that have long been at the heart of the program and continue to define its lasting impact.

For half a century, the musical program has been a source of pride for Gowanda Central School District and the greater Gowanda community. As the curtain rises on this golden anniversary, it celebrates not only this year’s cast and crew, but also the thousands of students, teachers, and community members who have helped keep the tradition alive. Seussical Jr. is a fun, family-friendly musical that brings Dr. Seuss’s beloved characters together in one colorful adventure. The story follows Horton the Elephant, who discovers the tiny world of Whoville and promises to protect it, teaching the lesson that “a person’s a person, no matter how small.” Along the way, Horton also agrees to care for Mayzie La Bird’s egg, proving his loyalty and kindness.

Narrated by the playful Cat in the Hat, the show features memorable songs like “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “It’s Possible,” “Alone in the Universe,” and “Solla Sollew.” With its catchy music, lively characters, and positive messages about friendship and believing in yourself, Seussical Jr. is a joyful celebration of imagination, perfect for young performers and audiences alike.

Excitement is building at Gowanda Middle School as preparations for this year’s musical are in full swing! Students and volunteers have been hard at work creating colorful costumes and imaginative props, bringing the world of the show to life piece by piece. The music room, classrooms, auditorium, and even the hallways have been filled with the sounds of rehearsed lines, soaring lyrics, and energetic choreography in recent weeks.

The middle school performers are thrilled to take the stage and can’t wait to share the fun, laughter, and joy of this production with their families and the entire community.

Selecting Seussical Jr. for this monumental anniversary carried special meaning for musical director Bett. In 2006, on the very stage where students perform today, Seussical Jr. was presented as a brand-new Broadway Junior production–and it also marked the final show directed by longtime music teacher and Bett’s personal mentor, Cindy Ripley.

“This was not an easy decision, because Seussical Jr. was also Mrs. Ripley’s final swan song,” Bett said. “But I could not think of a better show to celebrate 50 years. It truly feels like a full-circle moment for our program and a meaningful way to honor everything she built. Mrs. Ripley created something incredibly special here. Her dedication gave generations of students a place to belong and to shine.” Bett added that Ripley’s legacy remains an active part of the program today. “Cindy continues to return each year to support our students, offering encouragement and celebrating the hard work and accomplishments of every cast. That means so much, and it reminds us all of the strong foundation she gave us.”

Bett added that the themes of the show make it especially fitting for such a milestone celebration. “This show is filled with great storytelling, imagination, and important life lessons,” he said. “It teaches students about acceptance, loyalty, and the power of using their voice, which is exactly what this program has done for 50 years. It’s an honor to continue this tradition and see the impact it still has on students today. While we celebrate the past and all the people who made this program what it is, we’re also looking toward the future and making sure it continues to inspire students for the next 50 years.”

According to Darlene Silleman, principal of Gowanda Middle School, “It is a privilege to join the Gowanda Middle School community during such a milestone year as we celebrate 50 years of musical theater excellence. Watching our students and staff pour their hearts into this production of Seussical Jr. is a testament to the enduring spirit of our arts program. This

level of dedication and hard work is truly inspiring, and much of that success is thanks to the incredible leadership of Mr. Bett. He not only organizes and directs this complex production but also fosters an environment where every student feels empowered to shine. I am so proud of the effort being made to honor our past while building a bright future for our performers.”
