Opera House to screen ‘Sentimental Value’
Oscar nominated “Sentimental Value” will show on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of Oscar nominated “Sentimental Value,” on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday night screening will be shown with captions visible on the screen.
Nominated for nine Oscars including for Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Director, and acting nods for Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgard, and Elle Fanning, “Sentimental Value” tells the story of a film director and father navigating fractured family bonds.
In the film, sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav (Skarsgard), a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora (Reinsve) a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star (Fanning). Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father – and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.
New York Magazine calls the film “more than anything, a playful but also wondrously frank exploration of what it actually means to be family.” The Toronto Star calls it “a bittersweet pleasure to watch.” Vanity Fair calls it “graceful and limber, thoughtful and surprising.” FilmWeek notes “This might be the best movie of the year.” Rated R for brief nudity, a sexual reference, and some language, “Sentimental Value” runs two hours, 13 minutes. It is in Norwegian and English, with English subtitles.
Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Bank.
