Lecture explores Jamestown Trolley 93 restoration progress
Pictured above is an old photo of Trolley 93. Bob Johnston will talk about this important piece of Chautauqua County history and provide more information on its status and plans to celebrate its 100th birthday.
The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center will present the next program in its 2026 Here & There – Chautauqua County History, Travelers and Memories series on Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Jamestown Street Railway Trolley Car 93 marks its 100th birthday this year. Put in service in 1926, it was one of the many street cars that serviced passengers somewhere within Erie County, NY, Erie County, PA, and Chautauqua County. It is arguably the last surviving stand-alone car remaining from these areas.
A group of volunteers has been working since 2014 to restore the trolley car, a project that is now nearing completion. While pretty much cosmetically restored, there is still some work to be done on the trucks (the four railroad type wheel assemblies that support the trolley on the rails), but that is waiting on the completion of its final display location. Plans for a display building in conjunction with the Fenton History Center are moving forward, while fundraising for the project continues toward providing all that is necessary to ensure that this last remaining piece of Chautauqua County streetcar history is preserved.
Project Volunteer Bob Johnston will talk about this important piece of Chautauqua County history and provide more information on its status and plans to celebrate its 100th birthday.
Admission to the lecture is free, with donations gratefully accepted. Opera House programming is made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.
The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
