‘Gin Game’ coming to Westfield center

A deck of cards has rarely felt so loaded. Directed by David Oliver, D.L. Coburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Gin Game” runs at Lake Shore Center For The Arts in Westfield on July 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, and 26.

With sharp humor and mounting tension, the play turns a simple game of gin into a revealing study of aging, loneliness, and life’s uneasy dependence on chance.

On the back porch of a nursing home, new residents Weller and Fonsia, played by Tom Loughlin and ChrisTina Rausa, begin to know one another over games of gin. The porch’s stillness contrasts with the lively world inside, while visitors’ day quietly underscores their isolation. As the games repeat, Weller counts cards, ridicules fellow residents, resents being treated “like a child,” and grows increasingly furious at losing, while Fonsia keeps calling “gin” hand after hand. For all its laughter, “The Gin Game” is ultimately a comedic tragedy revealing truths about illness, financial insecurity, aging, and the ache of loneliness.

The Gin Game is part of Lake Shore Center For The Arts 2026 Season, running July 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. matinees on July 19 and 26. Please purchase $20 tickets online at https://lakeshorecenterforthearts.com/gin-game/
