‘Knitting with Pencils’ exhibit coming to gallery

WESTFIELD - Artist Maia A'Brams Horvath will be featured at Living Glass Gallery in Westfield for the month of July in time for the town's annual Alumni Weekend, bringing to town her exhibit "Knitting with Pencils": Art of the Self-Created Woman.
Horvath is originally from Westfield and attended WACS. Now residing in the Greater Rochester area with her husband of 30 years, she is a Freelance Artist working with paint and paper collage, mixed media and assemblage art.
Many of her pieces have been shown throughout the US and Europe, and at galleries and retail establishments in the Rochester area.
Horvath said: "For so many of us, growing up in Westfield was a tremendous blessing. In the '60s and '70s, our vibrant community nurtured children with the freedom to be kids, and with the support that allowed kids to discover themselves. We had friends we loved, and lives we treasured.
In Westfield, children had their own happy places, in fields and vineyards, by streams, on ball fields, playgrounds, at beaches, at friend's homes, or in those precious quiet places where dreams were dreamt and the future unfolded like a promise.
For so many of us, including myself, a journey into creativity became our happiest place, a place where we could explore new ideas and make new things, and these experiences often propelled us on a path we have followed to this day. There is something about making dreams come to fruition that is magical, and there was, and hopefully still is, something about Westfield that makes dreams and magic possible.
"But dreams often do not easily come true, and for me, rarely were the proper tools or supplies at hand needed to create what was conceived in my mind.
But the need to create runs strong, and overcoming a lack of tools or materials can also play a significant role in the creative process. Becoming innovative with materials and approach may have been born of necessity, but it has served me well. Growing and evolving as a self-taught artist has many benefits, including the willingness and confidence to dive into new mediums without apprehension, creating new methods to fulfill your vision.
" 'Knitting with Pencils' is one example of diving in. When all you have to work with are well used pencils, you can still knit, because no matter what life hands you, you can still dream. I remember it like it was yesterday. It's good to come home."
