1891 Opera House presents ‘Othello’

“Othello” will be shown Saturday at the Fredonia Opera House.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center will present Shakespeare’s classic Othello, captured live via satellite from London’s National Theatre, on Saturday at 1 p.m., as part of its Stage On Screen Series.

She’s a bright, headstrong daughter of a senator; elevated by her status but stifled by its expectations. He’s a refugee of slavery, having risen to the top of a white world. They find that love across racial lines has a cost. Wed in secret, Desdemona and Othello crave a new life together. But as unseen forces conspire against them, they find their future is not theirs to decide.

Captured live from the Lyttelton stage of London’s National Theatre, this extraordinary new production of Shakespeare’s compelling tragedy of boundary-defying love, thwarted by oppressive social barriers and meddling outside forces, is brought startlingly up to date.

Directed by Clint Dyer, it boasts a stellar cast that includes Giles Terera (Hamilton), Rosy McEwen (The Alienist), and Paul Hilton (The Inheritance).

London’s Times calls it “a visceral piece of theatre.” The Independent calls it “transfixing, full of vision.” WhatsOnStage calls it “extraordinary, revelatory … and relevant.” The production is part of the Stage on Screen Series at the Opera House, which is sponsored by Dr. James and Marcia Merrins. It runs three hours, nine minutes with one intermission.

This production contains racially offensive language and imagery, and depictions of mental and domestic abuse and violence, which some people may find upsetting.

Individual tickets to Othello are $15, ($10 students). Tickets may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, noon to 4:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.fredopera.org. The Stage on Screen Series is sponsored by Dr. James M. & Marcia Merrins.
