Cinema Series presents ‘A Haunting in Venice’

Kenneth Branagh stars in “A Haunting in Venice.”

The next film in the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is the latest in Kenneth Branagh’s series of films based on Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels, “A Haunting in Venice.” It will be screened on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

In post-World War II Venice, Hercule Poirot (Branagh), now retired and living in self-imposed exile, reluctantly attends a seance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the former detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets. Based upon the novel “Hallowe’en Party” by Agatha Christie.

AARP Movies for Grownups says “Branagh’s affection for Christie and her persnickety Belgian sleuth shines through in this lavish, luxurious whodunit set post-WWII in the City of Masks.” RogerEbert.com says the film is “the best of Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot movies. It’s one of Branagh’s best, period.” Entertainment Weekly calls it “a heck of a lot of fun.” The London Evening Standard calls it “just right for Halloween.” Rated PG-13 for some strong violence, disturbing images, and thematic elements, “A Haunting in Venice” runs one hour, 43 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.

The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, Opera House programming is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.
