Cinema Series presents ‘Next Goal Wins’

The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with the true-story inspired "Next Goal Wins," starring Michael Fassbender. It will be screened on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Directed by Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi, "Next Goal Wins" follows the true story of the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for its brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world's worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.
"A down on its luck team that has its own way of doing things turns a jaded coach into a human with a heart... we've all seen that before," notes the Arizona Republic. "But, Waititi's singular style makes it a joy to watch and a film worth cheering for." TheWrap calls the film "Waititi’s best and most crowd-pleasing effort to date." AARP Movies for Grownups calls it "a feel-good movie with potential to inspire audiences to cheer on this ragtag bunch." Rated PG-13 for some strong language and crude material, "Next Goal Wins" runs one hour, 44 mins.
Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.
