Cinema series presents ‘The Boys in the Boat’

“The Boys in the Boat” will be featured Saturday and Tuesday at the Opera House.

The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with the inspirational true story “The Boys in the Boat.” It will be screened on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Based on the No. 1 New York Times best-selling non-fiction book by Daniel James Brown and directed by George Clooney, “The Boys in the Boat,” is about the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. The sports drama follows this group of underdogs at the height of the Great depression as they are thrust into the spotlight and take on elite rivals from around the world.

The Austin Chronicle calls the film “a fine time at the movies, with engaging sports sequences, thoughtful storytelling, impactful visuals, and great performances.” HeyUGuys calls it “a beautifully told story in high Hollywood tradition (with) a cast whose dynamic and charm are as engaging as they are entertaining.” RogerEbert.com notes “when people say ‘they don’t make movies like that anymore,’ this is the kind of movie they’re talking about.” Rated PG-13 for language and smoking, “The Boys in the Boat” runs two hours, four minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.

The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, Opera House programming is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
