Fredonia Opera House to present true story ‘Ordinary Angels’

“Ordinary Angels” will be shown Saturday and Tuesday nights at the Fredonia Opera House.

The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with “Ordinary Angels,” starring two-time Academy Award-winner Hillary Swank. It will be screened on Saturday, April 6, and Tuesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m.

Sharon Steves (Swank), a fierce but struggling hairdresser in small-town Kentucky, discovers a renewed sense of purpose when she meets Ed Schmitt (Alan Ritchson), a widower working hard to make ends meet for his two daughters. With his youngest daughter waiting for a liver transplant, Sharon sets her mind to helping the family and will move mountains to do it. What unfolds is the inspiring tale of faith, everyday miracles, and ordinary angels, based on a true story.

With a 99% Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score, the film is called “heartwarming” by the San Francisco Chronicle. The Hollywood Reporter calls it “irresistible with its powerful feel-good story.” The Chicago Sun-Times calls it “a comfort-viewing movie that reminds us that even in these dark and stressful times, there are a lot of true and decent people out there who are capable of doing miraculous things.” Critic Rex Reed says the film “makes you feel good about the world.” Rated PG for thematic content, smoking, and brief bloody images, “Ordinary Angels” runs one hour, 56 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.

The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, Opera House programming is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.
