Opera House to screen ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’

“The Ballad of Wallis Island” will be shown on Saturday and Tuesday at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House.
The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of “The Ballad of Wallis Island” on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Charles (Tim Key), an eccentric lottery winner, lives alone on a remote island and dreams of getting his favorite musicians, McGwyer & Mortimer (Tom Basden & Carey Mulligan) back together. His fantasy turns into reality when the bandmates and former lovers accept his invitation to play a private show at his home on Wallis Island. Old tensions resurface as Charles tries desperately to salvage his dream gig.
Variety calls the film “alive with plenty of droll British humor and with a music-filled, picturesque finale that is sincerely earned … the best kind of crowd-pleaser: disarming, joyful and full of compassion for its oddball characters.” The New York Post calls it a “hilarious heart-warmer that only comes around once or twice a year to offer a blessed break from darkness, snobbery and streaming schlock. It’s so easy to love, even if love doesn’t come easy for its characters.” The San Jose Mercury News calls it “an emotional booster shot that lifts the spirits and gives us a case of the warm fuzzies.”
Rated PG-13 for some language and smoking, “The Ballad of Wallis Island” runs one hour, 40 minutes.
Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank.
