‘The Roses’ coming to Opera House

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch star in “The Roses,” which is Saturday and Thursday, Oct. 7.
The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of the film, “The Roses,” on Saturday and Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday night screening will be shown with captions visible on the screen.
Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. “The Roses” is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film “The War of the Roses,” based on the novel by Warren Adler.
BBC.com calls the film “a smart, wild, entertaining mix of droll British humor and glossy Hollywood film-making.” AARP Movies for Grown Ups says “It’s Colman and Cumberbatch at the top of their games, with a lively script and strong direction, that make ‘The Roses’ so much more than a routine reboot.” The Detroit Metro Times says it “actually works better than the original, with Cumberbatch and Colman having such a gorgeous and homey chemistry that you genuinely want them to fix their problems and not destroy each other’s lives.” Rated R for sexual content, language, and drug content, “The Roses” runs one hour, 45 minutes.
Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Bank.
