Silver Creek church offers free faith-based respite

SILVER CREEK — Are you a caregiver for someone living with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s or other dementia? If so, the newest collaboration between Catholic Charities of Buffalo and Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church can be a source of support.

The free Memory Care Respite Program is held the third Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the church, 60 Buffalo St., Silver Creek. The program offers four hours of respite for caregivers while providing fun, purposeful and supervised activities for a loved one living with memory impairment.

Trained volunteers oversee a variety of activities which can include arts, crafts, games and music, as well as lunch for participants, and provide a four-hour uninterrupted window of opportunity for caregivers to run errands, schedule a visit with a friend or attend an appointment.

Faith-based communities have a long history of supporting family caregivers through respite, which improves the lives of the caregivers and the lives of their loved ones, and offers assurances to caregivers who are often reluctant to ask for help or are mistrustful of outside agencies.

Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church’s respite program is free of charge and open to the community and surrounding areas. The program is currently accepting more participants and registration is required. This is not a drop-in program. The program is always looking for more volunteers.

For more information about the program, to register a loved one or find out about volunteering, please contact Beth Bayba, ministries leader, at 716-934-3725 or via email at beth.baya@gmail.com.
