Leon Church celebrates Christmas 1940s style
LEON — The Leon Historical Society’s 23rd Christmas has come and gone.
Last year we looked back at Christmas in the early 1800s Leon. This year we celebrated 1940’s style.
It’s 1945 and the war has ended. Rationing may be over but goods are still scarce. Many servicemen are still waiting to come home, but those that have were greeted with open arms!
The church was decorated with live tree with red and green paper chains, and lots of tinsel! There were real candles clipped to the branches (which we didn’t light!) and an assortment of blown glass ornaments on display. Metal ice skates as well as wooden toys were on display as well.
The church service was a traditional Methodist service, which hadn’t changed much in the 100 plus years since our Christmas service last year. All in all It was a great time celebrating the season and taking a fond look back at days gone by.
Local youth volunteered their time to help recreate the Christmas story from Luke 2 for the Leon Historical Society Christmas program. The children included Myah Quinn, Derrek and Jay Conover, Jesse and Brooklyn Daniels, Rebekah Jankowski, Grace and Brian Kelley, Kaine and Kennadie Logan, Courtney Zuppa, Kasey Pearce, Lily Voss, and Colton and Sephiria Reukauf. They played various roles such as Caesar Augustus, Joseph, Mary, shepherds, angels and even a star. The play added a nice touch to a post World War era themed Christmas program.
The Historical Society would like to thank Roxanne Kelley and many helpers and family!
