John the Baptist (Episcopal) Church announces Lenten events

John the Baptist (Episcopal) Church will be observing Lent with several different events starting with Ash Wednesday.

Lent is the start of 40 days of fasting and penance as Christians prepare for the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. This season is a reminder of Jesus’ fasting in the wilderness before He began His public ministry. Ashes, in the sign of the cross will be imposed at all services at St. John’s as a sign of penitence.

Services, on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26 will be held at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. “Ashes To Go” will be offered from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the entrance of the church. This is available for those unable to make the two services. Stations of the Cross will be observed each Friday at 6 p.m. during Lent. Stations are a representation of the path Jesus bore on his way to crucifixion. They are a reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made for humans to receive salvation.

As a part of a Lenten discipline, a Bible study will be held on Monday evenings during Lent. A Bible Study by Max Lucado, “Understanding Why Jesus Chose Nails And God’s Love Us,” will be the theme of the study. Lucado uses his wit to explain how our everyday situations relate to God’s love. The sessions will be held on the following Mondays: Feb. 24, March 9, March 23 and April 6 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

All are invited to all events at St. John’s, which is located on the corner of West Fourth and Lark Streets in Dunkirk.
