Dunkirk Senior Citizen Board of Directors
The Dunkirk Senior Citizen Board of Directors met recently with President Barbara Bajdas presiding. Bajdas led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Thank you cards were received from Sophia Urbanik, Bajdas and the St. Columban’s Home residents. A memo was received from the Natural Wellness Solutions Co. The February newsletter from the United Senior Council of Chautauqua County was reviewed. Annual dues were submitted to the county organization. A sympathy card was sent to Loretta Hemink.
The House Committee reported that a new water fountain was installed. A small hand-washing sink located in the main kitchen was repaired as well as the exit lights and motion doors. A second estimate was received from Kingsview Paving Co. for paving the back parking lot. The estimate was added to the previously submitted grant application.
There are 402 paid members thus far in 2016. All members are encouraged to renew their membership at this time.
The next Big Bingos are scheduled for March 9 and April 13. Members are invited to attend all sessions held on the second Wednesday of each month.
The Tuesday, Thursday exercise class scheduled their holiday party on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Bajdas reported members would be traveling to Portville for breakfast at Sprague’s Maple Farms, followed by casino gaming at the Allegany Casino on Monday, Feb. 15. Departure time is 9:30 a.m. The return time is approximately 7 p.m.
The annual trip to the Broadway Market will be on Wednesday, March 23. Departure time is 9:30 a.m. The $40 trip includes transportation to the Broadway Market, lunch at Chef’s Restaurant, shopping at the Market-in-the-Square and stores located in the Southgate Plaza, tips, goodie bags and prizes. Reservations are still available and are being accepted now. Return home time is approximately 5 p.m.
The March 14 Appreciation Day trip to Niagara Falls is sold out.
On April 11, the seniors will travel to the Batavia Downs Casino and the Hamburg Raceway Casino. There will be short stops at Oliver’s Candy Store and Kutter’s Cheese Store. Sign-ups will begin on Tuesday, March 1. Departure time is 8:30 a.m.
On April 27, the seniors will sponsor a Mystery Trip. The cost will be $29, which includes a buffet lunch, all tips, goodie bags and prizes. Sign-ups begin on Monday, March 7. There will be no casino stops on the mystery trip. Departure time is 9:30 a.m.
Exercise will be canceled on March 15 due to the scheduling of the Lifeline Screening at the Center. Carotid artery (plaque) screening, heart rhythm screening (atrial fibrillation), abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, peripheral arterial disease screening and osteoporosis risk screening will be conducted. Appointments can be made by calling 1-888-653-6450.
A St. Patrick’s Day potluck dinner will be held on March 17 at 4 p.m. Members are asked to bring a dish and $1. If members are unable to bring a dish, admission will be $5. Meat and beverage will be provided. Sign-ups will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Bajdas thanked the directors for a successful Super Bowl barbecue held on Feb. 7. with 130 dinners being served. Special bingo was played for prizes.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 3.
Grape Belt Senior
The next Grape Belt Senior potluck luncheon will be Monday, Feb. 22 at 11:30 a.m. Immediately after the dinner will be a presentation and opportunity to purchase clothing for women and girls from LuLaRoe. The next board meeting will be Monday, March 7, at 10:15 a.m. If exercise is canceled due to inclement weather there will be an announcement on WDOE.
All trips, extended as well as day trips, are open to the public, members and non-members. The openings are filling up fast. A paid deposit will reserve a place. There is an addition to the usual list, so continue reading. The list of 2016 trips is as follows:
May 7: Dirty Dancing Matinee Show at Shea’s Buffalo Theater and luncheon at Pearl Street Grill.
May 19 through 23: Extended trip to Nashville, Tenn. Final payment is due by March 4. (See details below)
June 9: Touring Buffalo with a sightseeing cruise on the Buffalo River as well as walking tours of city hall and the grain elevators. Lunch will be at the Pearl Street Grill. Paid reservations are due by April 15.
June 15: Seneca Niagara Casino trip and tribute show, “Four by Four” featuring music of the Beach Boys, Beatles, Bee Gees and Motown.
July 10: Yankees in Cleveland. Full payment is due by the first week in March.
July 27: Seneca Niagara Casino Customer Appreciation Event.
Aug. 10: Shaw Festival at Niagara-On-The-Lake (Canada: enhanced license or passport required) for “Alice in Wonderland” and lunch at Pillar & Post Restaurant.

Dec. 8: Seneca Niagara Casino with matinee show event “The Platters – Home for the Holidays” – original performers!
The extended trip to Nashville, Tenn. is from May 19 through 23 for five days. This will entail a number of highlights including the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Gaylord Opryland Resort, a guided tour through Nashville, a luncheon on the General Jackson Showboat, Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum and My Old Kentucky Dinner Train.
The Mackinac Island, Mich. extended trip from Sept. 11 to 14 for four days will include Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, a guided tour of Little Bavaria, the National Shrine of the Cross in the Woods, a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride around Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel for one of the luncheons.

Forestville Pioneer Social Club
The Forestville Pioneer Social Club met Feb. 1 with Ruth Kuehn presiding. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Barb Tower and the opening prayer was given by Norma Steward. Roll call was answered by 18 members.
The secretary’s report was given by Peg Heiden, and accepted on a motion by Ruby Seeley and seconded by Tower. The treasurer’s report was given by Angie Logan and approved on a motion by Betty Kuzura and seconded by Judy Hahn.
“Happy Birthday” was sung for the January birthdays of Kuzura, Dorothy Schneider, Wilma Crowell and the February birthday of Janice Polisoto.
Lunch tickets were won by Seeley and Kuzura. 50/50 was won by Kuzura and Marion Ziecker. Kuehn won the Riles & Woolley Award.
The 2016 officers will be installed at the next meeting.
The March 7 refreshment committee will be Ziecker and Peg Brown.
A motion to adjourn was made by Hahn and Nancy Wilson.
Silver Creek Seniors
The Feb. 9 meeting was called to order with 27 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance and singing “God Bless America” was the beginning of the meeting. Dorothy Miniri said the blessing before the club’s business started.
The January financial report was given by treasurer Lorrie Newman, followed by the petty cash report from Mary Ann Seibert.
Lorraine Bailey started a weekly memory game. Each week a different song from the past will be sung to see just how good everyone’s memory is.
The Silver Creek Seniors welcome the following new club members: Ellyn Sutehall, Bob Sutehall and Enabell Mirando.
Bob Sutehall will be chairman in charge of getting different projects and programs of interest for the club. If anyone has any ideas, let Sutehall know.
50/50 winners were Miniri, Bob Bailey and Mary Congdon. Door prizes went to Conrad Pawlak and Sandy George. Bingo was called by Joan Suski.
With the cold weather here again, next week there will be a variety of soups, breads and crackers to enjoy.
The day’s meeting ended with the singing of “Young At Heart.”
All seniors who would like a fun-filled day are encouraged to stop by the Silver Creek Seniors Club House on Route 5. Meetings are at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Sinclairville Senior Citizens
The Sinclairville Senior Citizens met recently for a luncheon and a meeting in the Sinclairville Fire Hall dining room at noon. President Margie McIntyre welcomed all to the luncheon and Pastor Allen Higgs gave the blessing prior to the lunch.
A fine meal was enjoyed by all, with a variety of food being served. Valentine decorations of red tinsel, candy and red placemats were provided by Linda Parmenter. McIntyre read a humorous story of a woman requesting some information on a southern campground, and using abbreviations in her request which the campground owner did not know. Following the luncheon, drawings were held by Diman Smith. Recipients included George Hetrick, Beverly Higgs, Doug Christian, McIntyre, June Whipple, Betty Wielgasz and Parmenter.
Guest speaker was Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace, who spoke to the group on scams and scam artists. Gerace talked about the IRS scam, the so-called inheritance scam, the Lottery scam, the sweepstakes scam, the jury duty scam, the computer scam, the grandchild bail-out scam and the ransomware scam to mention a few.
In all he said, “Do not give out any personal information over the phone and never give money to strangers. Do not be afraid to hang up your phone if you do not like what you are hearing or do not know the caller. Don’t open any email that you do not recognize.”
A very informative speech was enjoyed by all.
Later, the business meeting opened with all saying the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary John Sipos. Treasurer Charles Sylvester gave the financial status of the group.
The next meeting of the group will be on Tuesday, March 8 in the Sinclairville Fire Hall dining room at noon. Table decorations will be provided by Beverly Higgs. Since the meeting is close to St. Patrick’s Day, a corned beef and cabbage dinner will be provided by Smith. All those attending are asked to bring a dish of food to add to the meal and their own table service. Festive table decorations will be provided. New members are always welcome.
Collins 50 Plus Seniors
Activities are listed for the week of Feb. 14 to 19.
Sunday: Pickle Ball with Lois at 6:30 p.m. in the Painter Center gym (free class).
Monday: Exercises with Pat at 9 a.m. in the L.K. Painter Center gym.(free class).
Tuesday: No Active Senior Aerobics today; Soup and Sandwich lunch at noon in the Painter Center Yellow Room (salad, chili, and bread will be served for a $3 fee).
Wednesday: Exercises with Pat at 9 a.m. in the Painter Center gym (free class); Quilting with Florence at 10:30 a.m. in the Collins Library Community Room (free class); Senior Bowling at 1 p.m. at K&L Lanes in Gowanda (three games for $5); Games and crafts with Pat at 1 p.m. in the Painter Center Rose Room (free activity).
Thursday: Yoga with Suzie at 9 a.m. in the Painter Center gym (there is a small fee for this class); Pickle Ball at 6:30 p.m. in the Painter Center gym (free class).

Senior Club News
Brocton Portland Seniors
Brocton Portland Seniors met Jan. 26 at Brocton Legion, led by Margaret Jagoda, president, who welcomed Patty Ploetz, Chuck and Julie Utegg and introduced new members Barb Tower, Gil and Edie Seekings. Kate Cranston and Ruth Neal were the committee members for the day.
Installation of officers was performed by Mary Tripi, installing President Jagoda, Vice President Tom DeJoe, (Harold Buvholtz), Secretary Ruth Neal, and Treasurer Rita Stonefoot. Pat Zanghi is assistant treasurer and Robin Carr is the new program, entertainment, trip charge person. Minutes were read and corrected, with the treasurer’s report read and approved. Discussion was held regarding the Christmas party costs, with ideas and solutions. Stonefoot is collecting dues for the new year.
Ahira Hall Library is doing ‘Love is in the Air’ for Valentine’s Day. Contact the library for details. Carr reported on the United Senior Council meeting, with a motion made and passed for group membership.
Birthdays for December were Dave VanRenesslear and Maggie Rogers. January birthdays were both Kate and Rick Cranston, Secretary Neal and Bea Lee. A community chorus group led by Lucy Andrus meets Thursdays at St. Dominic’s. Those who like to sing are asked to call 792-4834. Mary Presto’s sister, Elizabeth Marx, is turning 100 years young and a birthday card signed by all to be sent to her in Lyons, NY. Door prizes were won by Josie Titus and Lee. Raffle winners were Chuck Utegg, Buvholtz, Anita Golubski and Neal. Bingo by Bob was held with the remaining Christmas items for prizes. On motion made by June Woollett and seconded by Marion Delcamp, the meeting was adjourned.
The next meeting will be Feb. 23 at Brocton Legion. The noon meal will be chili by Jagoda, with members to bring a dish to pass and their personal table service. Dues are due and new members are welcome.
Collins Center Seniors
The next meeting for the Collins Center Seniors will be Feb. 22 at the Gowanda American Legion with a potluck lunch at noon followed by a short meeting. A committee is working on an updated of the Constitution/Bylaws.
A few seats are available on Feb. 16 to the Seneca Niagara Casino. The motor coach will depart from the parking lot behind the stores on Main Street. in Gowanda at 8 a.m. The motor coach will depart from the same location at 8 a.m. Feb. 26 for the “Tribute to John Denver” at Kleinhans.
Seats are available on March 20 for “Finnegan’s Farewell” at Ripa’s Restaurant in Lancaster. We will say goodbye to Patrick James Finnegan, a mailman who won $2.5 million in Atlantic City and promptly dropped dead. All are sure to have an Irish good time as those in attendance eat, drink and be merry at this authentic Irish-American wake complete with traditional Irish drinking songs and dancing. Payment is due.
NEW: Old Order Amish Tour. On April 5, travelers are off to Grove City, Pa. The first stop is Wendell August Forge, a pioneer in creating unique hand-hammered metal giftware. Lunch will be at the Tavern on the Square, built in 1849. There will be a guided tour of an Amish Farm and Greenhouse, an Amish Quilt Shop, the Cheese House and the Apple Castle.
NOTE: Final payment for “Dirty Dancing” at Shea’s on May 7 is due Feb. 22.
A few seats are available for the May 9 to 11 trip to Hershey and Lancaster, Pa. The group will visit Chocolate World, tour the Hershey factory and have a fun trolley tour to learn the history of Hershey. Travelers will enjoy a guided sightseeing tour in Lancaster and see the show “SAMSON” at the Sight & Sound Millennium Theater. On the way home, a visit is planned to the Flight 93 Memorial. This trip is packed full of interesting activities and sites, as all of the group’s trips are.
NEW: June 15, at the Seneca Niagara Casino event center. “FOUR BY FOUR” is a tribute to the Legendary Music of the Beach Boys, Beatles, Bee Gees and Motown. The dynamic stars of the show perform instantly recognizable classic pop songs in full-staged choreographed production numbers. Enjoy an afternoon of feel good, raise the roof entertainment.
NEW: “Buffalo’s Happening” is the trip June 23. This trip is the old and the new of Buffalo. It starts with a guided tour of Shea’s Performing Arts Center. A delicious lunch is scheduled at the Hamlin House, a mansion built in 1860. Next, passengers will enjoy a guided Buffalo City Highlights Tour featuring world-renowned architecture, Victorian neighborhoods, the new developing Medical Complex and the Harbor Front sites and Canal side. The trip includes a visit to The Flying Bison Craft Brewery and a stop at the Made in America Store before heading home.

Lake Shore Seniors
The Lake Shore Seniors met at the Dunkirk Center at 1 p.m. on Feb. 3. President Stella Michalak opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of “God Bless America.”
Secretary Jeanne Hauser read an inspirational reading before the minutes of the last meeting. Charlene Hallmark motioned to accept the minutes, with a second by Sophie Kubasik.
Treasurer Betty Korzeniewski gave the financial report. Sara Azeez motioned to accept, with a second by Kubasik.
New business included the information on the screening tests, as well as February birthdays.
Attendance prizes were awarded to Hauser, Marian Genovese and Florence Rich. Nancy Woloszyn was the helper of the day.
The next meeting will be Feb. 17. The refreshment committee for that day will be Kubasik and Jean Kubera.
Betty Erick motioned to adjourn, with a second from Dorothy Sarzyniak. Refreshments and bingo followed.
Silver Creek Seniors
The first meeting of February was on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Several club members made waffles and sausage with a choice of strawberries, blueberries and cool whip for toppings. Once again, thank you to all the cooks for a splendid lunch. Before eating, Chaplain Dorothy Miniri said the blessing. On Feb. 9, Valentine’s Day and Lincoln’s Birthday will be celebrated with doughnuts.
The meeting then started with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by singing “God Bless America.” An update on all members unable to attend was given. Get-well wishes to those members.
Joan Suski did a great job sorting and cleaning out the cupboards. There was discussion about having a booth at this year’s Garden Faire. Each member would donate one item for the booth. Suski already has a few items from the cupboard sorting.
The meeting attendance was 22 club members and two guests: Ellyn and Bob Sutehall. 50/50 winners were Ellyn Sutehall, Mary Congdon and Sue Borowski. Door prizes were won by Harry Suski and Bob Bailey. Bingo was called by Ed Newman. The meeting closed with the singing of “Young At Heart.”
Dominoes is still a popular game to play. All seniors are welcome to stop by for the Tuesday meetings at noon and join in playing dominoes before and after the meetings.
Mt. Carmel Seniors Social Club
Due to high winds and power outages, the social club followed the lead of the Silver Creek Central School and canceled the day’s activities scheduled for Feb. 3.
The next scheduled meeting is on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at which time the club will feature its annual Valentine’s Day party.
The assigned committee for this event includes: Ginny Chesbro, Pauline Flitt, Janet Lasker and Mary Ann Seebert.
