Mayville Senior Citizen Meeting held Feb. 7

After a variety of dishes including casseroles, salads, breads and desserts, Janet Loomis, president, began the meeting. Dianne Goodrich told two funny stories, a poem called “His Presence” and then all recited the Lord’s Prayer. Janet led the Pledge of Allegiance. The secretary and treasurer reports were read and approved. Mary Carlson listed February birthdays and anniversaries and cards sent.

Janet stated that Thursday, Feb. 28 is the last day to sign up and pay for the April 16 trip to Buffalo to shop at the Broadway Market, have dinner at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens, then shop at the Made in America Store. $73 member fee and $77 non-member fee.

The kitchen committee was thanked. Guest, Bert Kensellar, was welcomed. Door prizes were won by Joyce Ayers, Kathy Sukalac and Herb Magnuson.

Bill Tornstrom, program chairperson, introduced Judy Wroda, Southwestern Independent Living Center, Inc. Wroda shared personal stories regarding abuse of the elderly and widespread homelessness in Chautauqua County. She is very well informed through both education and personal experience and encourages anyone to call her with problems. She will do her best to give the best possible options to resolve their situation.

At out next meeting, Thursday, Feb. 21 at noon at the Mayville VFW, we are having a soup and sandwich lunch. Please come join us and bring a dish to pass and your place setting including a cup or bowl for soup.

Silver Creek Seniors

The Feb. 12 meeting was cancelled due to an icy mixture of snow, rain, sleet and wind.

At the next 1 p.m. meeting on Feb. 19 at the Senior Center, we will warm up to cozy bowls of soup and chase away the cold winter blues, thanks to volunteers.

United Senior Citizens to resume monthly meetings

Members of the United Senior Citizens came together on Dec. 10, 2018 to celebrate the Christmas season and to hold the final meeting of 2018.

Beginning the festivities an appetizer tray consisting of assorted cheeses, vegetables and pepperoni [crackers], in addition to flavorful punch was enjoyed by all those attending. After the hors d’oeuvres, member Wendy Black offered the blessing and the baked ham dinner was served, complete with tossed salad, smashed baby reds, squash and green beans. Ice cream with chocolate sauce or creme de menthe was the dessert for those with a sweet tooth. It was perfect with a nice hot cup of coffee!

Before everyone was afflicted with “fat baby syndrome” (or ‘falling asleep after being fed’), Vice President Linda Riley called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ed McClenathan and ‘God Bless America’ was patriotically sung by the group. December birthdays were then announced and well-wishes sung to Peggy Pokoj, Sandy Barone and Silvana Bajdas. Member Russell Dalby shared a well-received joke and member Robin Carr recited a few jokes donated by Attendance Taker Genevieve Ludemann. The 50/50 winners for the day were Josie Wierczynski, Joanna Brown, Rosemary Mancuso, David Van Rensselaer and Virginia Nedveski. The Bingo committee had extra prizes to dispense with in addition to the cash prizes to the many winners that chose to stay and play.

The United Senior Citizens meet, greet and eat monthly from March to December at the Fredonia Beaver Club on Prospect Street, Fredonia. If you like to have a catered lunch with friends in addition to shared monthly jokes and the occasional speaker, you are warmly invited to join the group ($5 dues) and come on the second Monday of the month. The catered lunch ($10) is always delicious and includes dessert and coffee. Please join us Monday, March 11 at noon. In lieu of the traditional Irish cabbage & corned beef lunch, we will be served meatloaf, gravy on the side, Redskin smashed potatoes, tossed salad with homemade dressing, vegetable medley, rolls and butter and apple crisp (reminding us ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’!).

Members may renew dues ($5) at this time in addition to reserving lunch. Send ($10/ lunch) check made payable to the United Senior Citizens and send to Evonne Hennebery, PO Box 706, Dunkirk NY 14048 by March 4. Hope you can come!
