Silver Creek Seniors

President Ed Newman called the Feb. 19 meeting to order on a day of celebrating both St. Valentine and Presidents Day. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and to celebrate the noble services of every president from 1789 to 2017, “God Bless America” was sung as a solemn prayer honoring the office of the United States Presidency. Chaplain Dorothy Miniri offered prayers of thankfulness for the blessings and gifts each day brings to us. There were soups to sip, to warm every heart and to bring back those “yummy for the tummy” childhood days, thanks to volunteers.

Humor, it seems, is just what the doctor ordered. Open wide and say, “hahaha.” Older people with strong funny bones stay younger longer. Pauline Flitt dispensed just the right dose of chuckles and chortles that reduces anxiety and helps win our battles with stress. Great job, Pauline!

Valentines Day was celebrated with sweet desserts, sweet hearts and loving memories, recalling Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s tender words “How do I love you? Let me count the ways. I love you to the depths and breadth of my very soul.” Wow! How sweet is that? We send Browning’s love to everyone this February and all throughout the year.

50/50 winners were Sue Borowski, Max Church and Miniri. Door prizes were won by Enabell Mirando, Judy Hahn and Borowski. Jan Snyder called mind-sharpening bingo and the winners were Lorrie Newman, Borowski, Ernie Hilliker (thrice), Ellyn Sutehall, Joan Suski, Shirley Sikorski, Flitt (twice) and Miniri.

At the next 1 p.m. meeting on Feb. 26 at the Senior Center, stress-reducing pizza will be served. This report was compiled with loving cooperation associate secretary Eleanor Lemiszko. Thank you so much.

United Senior Citizens news

Members of the United Senior Citizens came together on Dec. 10, 2018 to celebrate the Christmas season and to hold the final meeting of 2018.

Beginning the festivities an appetizer tray consisting of assorted cheeses, vegetables and pepperoni [crackers], in addition to flavorful punch was enjoyed by all those attending. After the hors d’oeuvres, member Wendy Black offered the blessing and the baked ham dinner was served, complete with tossed salad, smashed baby reds, squash and green beans. Ice cream with chocolate sauce or creme de menthe was the dessert for those with a sweet tooth. It was perfect with a nice hot cup of coffee!

Before everyone was afflicted with “fat baby syndrome” (or ‘falling asleep after being fed’), Vice President Linda Riley called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ed McClenathan and’God Bless America’ was patriotically sung by the group. December birthdays were then announced and well-wishes sung to Peggy Pokoj, Sandy Barone and Silvana Bajdas. Member Russell Dalby shared a well-received joke and member Robin Carr recited a few jokes donated by Attendance Taker Genevieve Ludemann. The 50/50 winners for the day were Josie Wierczynski, Joanna Brown, Rosemary Mancuso, David Van Rensselaer and Virginia Nedveski. The Bingo committee had extra prizes to dispense with in addition to the cash prizes to the many winners that chose to stay and play.

The United Senior Citizens meet, greet and eat monthly from March to December at the Fredonia Beaver Club on Prospect Street, Fredonia. If you like to have a catered lunch with friends in addition to shared monthly jokes and the occasional speaker, you are warmly invited to join the group ($5 dues) and come on the second Monday of the month. The catered lunch ($10) is always delicious and includes dessert and coffee. Please join us Monday, March 11 at noon. In lieu of the traditional Irish cabbage & corned beef lunch, we will be served meatloaf, gravy on the side, Redskin smashed potatoes, tossed salad with homemade dressing, vegetable medley, rolls and butter and apple crisp (reminding us ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’!).

Members may renew dues ($5) at this time in addition to reserving lunch. Send ($10/ lunch) check made payable to the United Senior Citizens and send to Evonne Hennebery, PO Box 706, Dunkirk NY 14048 by March 4. Hope you can come!
