Dunkirk Senior Center to host fall prevention event

The Chautauqua County Office for the Aging in collaboration with Brooks Hospital Physical Therapy Department will be hosting a fall prevention event. The event is being held at the Dunkirk Senior Center, 45 Cliffstar Court, Dunkirk, on Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event is free and opened to the public.

It is a myth to think that only older adults fall, but it is a fact that when an older adult falls, the repercussions can be much more serious, if not deadly. According to the Center for Disease Control, every 19 minutes an older adult dies from a fall and every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. Even when a fall does not cause physical injury, it can lead to a fear of falling and start diminishing one’s activities and lifestyle. Since a fall can happen for a variety of reasons, at this event you can meet with physical therapists, exercise and vision experts, dieticians and more. These experts will share the small and big ways you can prevent a fall. For more information call NY Connects at 363-4582.
