Silver Creek Seniors

The Sept. 10 meeting was called to order on an unusually tepid day. President Ed Newman warmly welcomed guests Vicki and John Schabel, brother and sister-in-law of Mary Ann Seibert, who are summering here from Lakeland, Florida. In the same manner, he welcomed back Mary Wode. Next was a surprise visit from guests Bob and Denise Bailey of Dunkirk, who arrived with cake and cupcakes in hand, singing “Happy Birthday” to step-mom Lorraine Bailey. The sweets were courtesy of Lisa Bailey Brisley of B & B Cookie Cottage in Brocton – Lorraine’s step-daughter. Truly a delightful surprise.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and “God Bless America” was sung with sentiment. Pauline Flitt invoked the blessing, giving thanks for the friendship shared, the food prepared and the beauty of this day. The inviting table was brimming with nourishment – Hunter stew, goulash, ravioli, cocktail meatballs, meat loaf, green bean salad, Harvard beets, a cheese and pepperoni platter, applesauce, melon and cookies. In memory of their mom, Joyce Markham, daughters and son-in-law Claudia, Cathy and Bryan brought two decorative cakes lettered “Remembering Joyce.” It was a sweet tribute to a very sweet lady.

The Comedy Corner featuring Don Burghardt, Pauline Flitt and Joan Suski brought on chuckles and chortles, chasing away stress that is no laughing matter.

It is written that the Japanese have a word “Komrebi” for the particular kind of sunlight that is filtered through the trees. In its light, you will feel an emotional or spiritual light that is so distinct that it deserves its untranslatable name. Our memory songs tell us that “This Little Light of Mine – I’m Gonna Let it Shine.” And please know that “You Light Up My Life.”

50/50 winners were Cathy Hebb, Sue Borowski and Ruth Sheeler. Door prizes were won by Seibert, Denise Bailey and Judy Hahn. Jan Snyder called mind-sharpening bingo and the winners were Claudia Markham, Lorrie Newman (twice), John Schabel, Hebb, Flitt (twice), Carm Tampio, Burghardt (twice), Ed Newman and Harry Suski.

At the next 1 p.m. meeting on Sept. 17, various soups will be served, thanks to volunteers.

Sinclairville Senior Citizens

On a warm Tuesday in September, the members of the Sinclairville Senior Citizens met at the Sinclairville Firehall Dining Room for a luncheon and meeting. President June Whipple welcomed all to the gathering and said that this was the fall gathering. Pastor Phil Shay led all in a blessing prior to the meal. Festival fall table decorations were provided by Betty Wielgasz and Linda Parmenter. A variety of delicious food with ample amounts was available for all to enjoy.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by secretary LouAnn Smith. John Sipos led all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Treasurer Charles Sylvester gave the financial report of the organization. The list of those celebrating a birthday and those celebrating an anniversary was read by sunshine chairman Betty Wielgasz. The birthday song was sung to Carol Hetrick and the anniversary song sung to Jim and Carolyn Hendrickson. New members Fred and Jane Wing were welcomed.

Present Whipple told about attending the United Senior Citizens Council. Diman Smith talked about a 39-year-old shirt from his lacrosse team and the special baseball hat worn in a tournament.

Meeting prizes were awarded by President Whipple. Recipients included Russell Delahoy, Ray Wood, Carol Hetrick, Martha Harmon, Terry Fox, Diman Smith, LouAnn Smith, John Sipos, Diane Shaw, Jim Hendrickson, Linda Ivett, Jaymi Clark, Jane Wing, Bonnie Larkin, Betty Wielgasz and Linda Parmenter. The next luncheon meeting will be on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at noon in the Sinclairville Firehall dining room. All those attending are asked to bring a dish of food to pass and their own table service. The guest speaker will be Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello. Table decorations will be provided by Russell Delahoy and Lori Polizzi. New members are always welcome.
