Silver Creek Seniors

The Oct. 8 meeting was called to order on a crisp, sunny fall day. President Ed Newman warmly welcomed guests Axel Mannersberg of Silver Creek and Carol DePasquale and Cyndi Sheedy of Sunset Bay – friends of Mary Wode and Sue Borowski. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and “God Bless America” was sung with seriousness. Chaplain Pauline Flitt invoked the blessing, giving thanks and appreciation for the food to be shared and the new and old friends united in a circle of love. Ellie’s Deli delivered pizza. That open pie of red dough, tomatoes and pepperoni is always pleasing to the taste buds. A side salad and gratifying desserts included banana cream cake, brownies, mini cupcakes and cinnamon apple slices, thanks to volunteers.

The Comedy Corner featured Mary Wode, Don Burghardt and Flitt, focusing on signs of aging. For example – you know you’re old when happy hours is nap and when weight-lifting is standing up.

A Zen proverb suggests “if you want to climb a mountain, begin at the top.” Today, in song, we will climb one and begin “On Top of Old Smoky.” When we reach it, we find that “She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain,” and that “I Like Mountain Music” – Hope you do, too.

50/50 winners were DePasquale, Claudia Markham and Jean McDaneld. Door prizes were won by Burghardt and Shirley Siskorski. Markham called mind-sharpening bingo and the winners were Sally Shevlin, Sikorski (twice), Jen Zlotnick, Sheedy, DePasquale (thrice), Lorrie Newman (thrice), Judy Hahn, Ellyn Sutehall, Flitt and Burghardt.

At the next 1 p.m. meeting on Oct. 15, September and October birthdays will be celebrated. Cake and ice cream will be served.
