Brocton Portland Seniors

Although there were no guests, 34 members of the Brocton Portland Seniors managed to meet, greet and eat a delicious tureen luncheon for their February meeting at the John W Dill Post 434 (American Legion) in Brocton.

The meeting began with members standing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Gil Seekings, followed by a moment of silence for passing member, Lena Elliott, and all those who were brought to remembrance. Then everyone said the Lord’s Prayer in unison.

Tables were decorated with beautiful silk flower sprays in multiple vases and a big thank you to the committee for the day: Linda Riley, Kate Cranston, Elaine Frederickson, Wendy Black and Tom DeJoe, our monthly EXTRA helper.

The secretary’s report was given and approved by DeJoe, seconded by Mary Carey and followed by the treasurer’s report, approved by Linda Burton, seconded by June Woollet. A variety of cards sent out to different members included get well, thinking of you and sympathy cards. President Margaret Jagoda announced a tentative Aug. 18 Salamanca Casino outing which will include “Free Play,” lunch and transportation. Cost is $30 and contact Jagoda at 792-7385 with any questions. “Happy Birthday” was expressed to members Peg Gatto, Eris Hogue and Carrol Kennedy. The 50/50 raffle was managed by Marie Emke and winners were Shirley Wolnik, Ruth Neal, Ruth Ann Foster, Betty Erick and Edith Seekings. Cash door prizes were won by Sue Schrantz and Carm Johnson. In addition, Beulah Williams won candy AND a vase with flower spray. It didn’t get any sweeter than that until an additional 10 door prize winners were announced! A variety of chocolate hearts or boxes of candy went to: Carey, Kennedy, Burton, Erick, Seekings, Jane Perkins, Ruth Neal, Patty Ploetz, Bob Jagoda and Pete Spinuzza. After all the excitement of candy – members were treated to bingo. Suffice it to say there were over 31 big wins from one dollar to $5 per game with many members being very lucky winning more than once!

The next meeting of the Brocton Portland Seniors will be on Tuesday, March 31 at noon. The committee for the day will be the Jagodas, Seekings, Linda Burton and Nancy Munson. This will be a catered lasagna, salad and roll dinner at a cost of $5. Contact Treasurer Becker at 679-5125 with your reservation no later than March 17. Members may bring desserts and don’t forget your personal table service! See you on the last Tuesday of the month!

Silver Creek Seniors

The March 3 meeting was called to order on the first Tuesday of the third month of the year. President Ed Newman warmly welcomed guest Cindy Anger, daughter of Joan and Harry Suski. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and “God Bless America” was sung with high respect. Chaplain Pauline Flitt invoked the blessing, giving thanks for the food prepared and offering gratitude and prayers for God’s healing and peace for those in need everywhere. Thanks to volunteers, the table was teeming with tempting goodness – sloppy Joes, tossed salad, deviled eggs and applesauce. Desserts aplenty such as luscious pineapple and lemon cream cakes, chocolate cupcakes, cookies and cherry ambrosia gelatin were a delight to the senses. Add to that heaps of chocolate candies and as Jackie Gleason would say, “How sweet it is.”

The Comedy Corner quartet starring Flitt, Lorrie Newman, Don Burghardt and Jen Zlotnick once again confirmed that they were clearly capable of cleverly crafting cute, corny clips of comicality creating a cure for frowns that soon turned upside down. Laugh and the world laughs with you.

As the poet William Cullen Bryant noted, “The stormy March is come at last, with wind and cloud and changing skies.” We would like to add – but soon to come, in a sweet disguise, is the green of spring, a precious prize. Soon the blossoms of spring are sure to bring “High Hopes” to folks who love “American the Beautiful” and who are forever grateful that “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land.” God bless us every one, and happy thoughts of springtime to all.

50/50 winners were Lorraine Bailey, Lorrie Newman and Sue Borowski. Door prizes were won by Richard Carlson, Zlotnick, and Gene Chesbro. Jan Snyder called mind-sharpening bingo and the winners were Gene Chesbro, Shirley Sikorski, Ellyn Sutehall (twice), Flitt, Judy Hahn, and Ginny Chesbro.

At the next 1 p.m. meeting on March 10, the luncheon will be served by selected volunteers.

The meeting ended with the singing of “Young at Heart.”
