Submitted Photo Frances Chmiel of Gowanda celebrated her 95th birthday on March 1 with her family.

Silver Creek Seniors

The March 10 meeting opened on a typical windy, rainy day. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and “God Bless America” was sung with homage. Chaplain Pauline Flitt invoked the blessings, giving thanks for those who prepared the food we are about to share and praying that all of humanity will open their eyes and hearts to those in need. With visions of encouraging warmer weather, volunteers offered a summery picnic-style luncheon of choice baked beans and franks, with side dishes of spinach-mushroom quiche, cole slaw, a relish tray crackers and cheese, salsa and scoops. Sweet treats to consider were spice cake, cookies, pumpkin pie, mini donuts and fluffy raspberry gelatin, all thanks to volunteers.

The Comedy Corner was alive and well with Flitt, Don Burghardt and Jan Zlotnick bringing with them chuckles and laughs proving that humor often goes hand in hand with resilience. And humor is cumulative – the more you use your sense of humor, the more things seem less stressful, according to experts. Now for a little humor – why do hot dogs go to the gym? Answer: to get better buns.

Today our mind-sharpening memory songs go back in time. Come along, as we take a “Sentimental Journey” “Till the End of Time” – then relax, and let “The Rest of the World Go By.” Always remember that “Time Waits for No One,” and we shall not waste it.

50/50 winners were Joan Suski, Enabell Mirando and Gene Chesbro. Door prizes were won by Burghardt, Lorraine Bailey and Ed Newman. President Newman called mind-sharpening bingo and the winners were Jan Snyder (twice), Mary Ann Seibert, Lorrie Newman, Marge Church, Harry Suski and Ginny Chesbro.

At the next 1 p.m. meeting on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day and the wearing of the green will be celebrated. A ham and cabbage luncheon will be served by selected volunteers. Happy early St. Patrick’s Day to everyone.

Sinclairville Senior Citizens

The Sinclairville Senior Citizens meet once a month on the second Tuesday at noon in the Sinclairville Firehall Dining room for a luncheon and meeting. The March meeting was held with President LouAnn Smith welcoming all to the gathering for the St. Patrick’s Day luncheon. Festive table decorations and candy were provided by Jaymi Clark and President Smith, and tables were decorated with the help of Ray Wood. Pastor Phil Shay led all in a blessing prior to the meal, and John Sipos led all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Pastor Shay led all in the Lord’s Prayer. Sunshine chairman Betty Wielgasz read the names of those celebrating a birthday or an anniversary. Linda Parmenter was recognized for her birthday. The birthday song was then sung.

A fine corned beef and cabbage dinner was prepared by President Smith, and all those attending brought dishes of food to add to the meal. There were ample amounts for all to enjoy. President Smith gave a historical message about St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland and said that in the United States, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1762 in New York City. There paraders included Irish soldiers serving for England, and those who were homesick for their native country. This was 14 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read by secretary Clark, and the financial report was read by treasurer Charles Sylvester. Prizes were awarded by President Smith. Recipients included Sipos, Diane Shaw, Susan Sipos, Linda Parmenter, Ray Wood, Martha Harmon, secretary Clark, Fed Wing, Jane Wing, Diman Smith, president Smith, Carol Hetrick, June Whipple, Russell Delahoy, and Lori Polizzi.

The next gathering will be on Tuesday, April 14 at noon in the Sinclairville Firehall dining room. This will be the Easter meeting, and festive table decorations will be provided by Mrs. Parmenter and Mrs. Wielgasz. All those attending are asked to bring a dish of food to add to the meal. New members are always welcome.
