Leadership, academic achievement and volunteerism are words that describe high school seniors Peyton D’Anthony of Chautauqua Lake Central School and Eliora Brown of Westfield Academy and Central School. Both seniors were given “Scholars of the Month” recognition by the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville during its Jan. 21 session, which was held at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church in Westfield.

Mary Swanson, Westfield-Mayville Rotary immediate past president, presided during the meeting. She welcomed the two honorees, their parents and relatives, school administrators and Rotarians to the session. Following dinner and some club business, there was a brief program about the Gift of Life program, which was given by Rotarian Pat Castiglia, Rotary District 7090 Gift of Life vice president.

Barbara Fay, Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club Youth Services committee member, then described various Rotary youth services programs and a district scholarship. Janese Berkhouse, Westfield-Mayville Rotary club secretary, introduced senior Peyton D’Anthony, while Barbara Fay welcomed senior Eliora Brown. The Rotarians announced some of the scholars’ many accomplishments, and each of the seniors stated their college and career plans.

Peyton D’Anthony, a Chautauqua Lake Central School senior, is the daughter of Rob and Jodie D’Anthony of Ripley. This scholar, who is academically ranked in the top 5% of her class, will graduate in June with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors and Science endorsement. Her academic success has earned her the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, as well as the George Eastman Youth Leadership Award.

Actively involved in her school, D’Anthony is the CLCS President of the Class of 2020, President of the Student Administration, National Honor Society historian, and president of the Language Club. A natural leader, D’Anthony has attended the CLCS Leadership Engagement Seminars, the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar at the University of Rochester, and also the First Amendment, First Vote Women’s Rights Conference in Seneca Falls. Also, she is the team captain for the girls varsity soccer team, of which she has been a member for five years.

Outside of school, D’Anthony volunteers as a teaching assistant for the Ripley Central School elementary summer program. She is a co-leader of the CLCS 7th Grade Transition Day to introduce Ripley Central School 6th grade students to their program at CLCS in their next school year. D’Anthony is also a Footsteps Prayer Team Captain. She is currently employed at Webb’s Captains Table. After graduation, D’Anthony plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology to pursue her Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Modern Language and Culture with a Spanish Option. She hopes to later obtain her Master’s Degree in English as a Second Language. She is considering teaching English internationally.

Eliora “Ellie” Brown, a Westfield Academy and Central School senior, is the daughter of Bryan and Amber Brown of Westfield. In June she will graduate with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. During her high school career, this scholar has enrolled in numerous Jamestown Community College courses. By the time she graduates, she will have earned 20 JCC credits, as well as additional credits by having taken a SUNY College at Buffalo science course. Also, she is enrolled in various high school courses for local credit.

Brown is the WACS Class of 2020 vice president. She was a member of the Drama Club, Key Club, Environmental Club, and Faith, Hope, and Love. She is a member of the Handbell Ensemble, Senior High Chorus, Westwinds (a select choral ensemble), and Firecrackers (an all-female group). She has held roles in her school’s drama productions of “Into the Woods,” “Newsies,” “The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickelby,” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

This scholar has also earned over 300 hours of community service through the Centerstage Dance Studio, North East Alliance Church and Patterson Library. She has held employment as a home health aide. In the fall of 2020, Brown will attend Eastern University to pursue a nursing degree. She plans to become a neonatal specialist.
