Virtual ensemble strikes right note

Matthew Morales plays the double bass in the virtual ensemble.

Students at the State University of New York at Fredonia came together, while apart, to make music while social distancing.

The treasurer of the Fredonia chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Katie Dessert, put together a video of the ensemble performing “We’re All in this Together” from Disney’s High School Musical.

“I wanted to lift people’s spirits, so I put together a NAfME Virtual Ensemble so that we can still make music even when we are far apart,” Dessert said.

The video was made by each individual member sending in their own videos, playing their parts on their instruments or singing and dancing.

The performers included Julia Turner singing soprano from Kingston, Helen Smit singing alto from Fredonia, Amanda Gribbin on percussion from West Babylon, Rachel Kempf singing soprano from Buffalo, Arianna Durkin playing the flute from East Aurora, Matthew Morales on double bass from Fishkill Kathleen Peknic on the flute from East Rockaway, Rachel Proffitt singing soprano from Fredonia, and Katie Dessert singing soprano from Fredonia.

Julia Turner from Kingston sings soprano in the collaborative video.

“Quarantine is hard for musicians, … I just want to spread it out to as many people as possible to help cheer people up,” said Dessert.
