Courtney Campese, a junior biology major at the State University at Fredonia with minors in chemistry and public health from Lancaster, N.Y., has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship to support her Spring 2022 study abroad experience at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia.

“My goals for studying abroad are to expand my knowledge and independence while being away from home and adapting to new cultures across the world,” Campese said. “I hope to acquire an internship in Australia in the medical field to be educated on the difference in their health care system compared to the U.S.”

Campese chose her program because, “As a student studying biology, I am very interested in seeing the diverse marine life and variety of other animals that I would not be exposed to at home in Buffalo, N.Y. I am intrigued by Australian culture, academics and nature.”

Nationally competitive Gilman scholarships seek to promote access to study abroad opportunities to students with high financial need. U.S. citizens who receive the Pell Grant are eligible for up to $5,000 in scholarship money through this prestigious award.
