Valley Historical Society holds Treasure Trove

SINCLAIRVILLE — The Valley Historical Society held it annual summer picnic and Treasure Trove at the Sinclairville Ballpark Pavilion recently.

The blessing prior to the meal was given by president Larry Barmore. Following the picnic meal, the meeting was opened with all saying the Lord’s Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by secretary Sue Peacock and treasurer John Sipos gave the financial report of the society.

Discussion was held concerning the upcoming annual History Fair on Saturday, Sept. 11, from breakfast at the Sinclairville Fire Hall dining room 7 a.m. until the fireworks at 9 p.m. The day is the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and members are asked to wear red, white and blue.

Following the meeting, the annual Treasure Trove was held. All those attending were asked to bring an item of old to show and tell. Susan Sipos showed a binder of information regarding the patents of the six-sided R.W.Fenner butter church which was invented in South Stockton.

Betty Jean Ridout showed pictures of the quilts Bisa Butler make from pictures. Ruth Nichols showed a binder of old family photographs. Gail Dash showed frame which held a homespun stitching sampler from 1801. Charles Sylvester showed a Hershey Park Gala Day booklet from 1962. John Sipos showed two old Erector sets from 1931 and 1938. “Colonel” Victor Richardson told of how he became “Colonel” though the auctioning school, and old family items including his baby book, an old postcard, and pictures of the old family home and family.

The next meeting of the Valley Historical Society will be on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Valley Historical Society museum building located at the corner of Main and Lester streets in the village. New members and guests are welcome.
