CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary Unit 1280 held their annual dish-to-pass picnic at the Legion Post on Aug. 10 with 14 senior members attending; five officers were present. The evening opened with a prayer from unit member Kathi Runkle, then all enjoyed a “pot-luck picnic” and desserts.

Following dinner, acting President Pat Hayward began with the announcement that installed President Lauren Sharp had to resign from her position due to circumstances that would not allow her to serve. A letter of nomination was read, and following protocol, Vicki Yonkers was voted in as 2021-22 President; past county and Unit 1280 President Pat Hayward performed the installation.

An informal meeting was then conducted by Hayward, opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. As it had been two months since the last meeting, Secretary Carol Baker read previous meeting minutes to refresh memories of past happenings. She also read a letter from our Empire Girl State representative, Grace Zahm, thanking us for choosing her, as she truly enjoyed the experience.

Sally Lawson reported recently the group did a small funeral luncheon, our first since the COVID-19 breakout. Lawson also noted that she and Yonkers chaired the Cassadaga “National Night Out” on Aug. 3 at the Cassadaga Fire Department. Sherriff James Quattrone and some deputies were present, along with some of the State Troopers, the SWAT mobile and the bomb robot, the roll-over unit, 4 Canine units, and a drone. Informative demonstrations were given by each section. Also in attendance were members of the Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department and EMTs. The EMTs performed blood pressure checks; the firemen and fire ladies showed off the fire trucks and equipment, explaining the purpose of each, in the event of an emergency. It was well attended by the community.
