South Dayton honors former train station agent

Joy Bowen, William Neubeck’s sister-in-law, is pictured with Neubeck’s daughters Phyllis Ward, Mary Snell and Janet Markham. Not pictured is Neubeck’s son, Bill Neubeck.

Family and friends were welcomed by Mayor Robert Killock to the dedication of the William “Bill” Neubeck Corner of the Freight Room in the South Dayton Depot Museum.

Larry Zollinger, Pine Valley School Central School board member and former mayor of South Dayton, shared his memories of Neubeck’s being caring and interested in the community. One of Zollinger’s most memorable moments was his dad giving him money, a note, and sending him to the depot for Neubeck to send a telegram. Neubeck’s granddaughter Kristie Markham read a letter written by Jerry Green, vice chairman of the Friends of the Depot, of his youth growing up in South Dayton, the positive impact Neubeck had on the community and highlighted the many years Neubeck was the station agent.

Mayor Robert Killock spoke about Neubeck’s friendliness and his South Dayton career of station agent from 1948 to 1980. Killock presented the Neubeck family with the William “Bill” Neubeck plaque that hangs honorably in the corner of the Freight Room for all to see.

Starting at $3.50/week.
