Dwyer Scholarship award recipients are named
The Dwyer Scholarship Fund recently awarded $3,400 in scholarships to Chautauqua County students.
The recipient of the $1,000 scholarship award was Maria Fred of Dunkirk. Fred is enrolled in the Nursing Program through Jamestown Community College and is attending her second semester in the nursing program. Maria, at the age of 38, is pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse and helping those around her.
The $500 recipients include Melissa Bentley (Jamestown), Emilee Blair (Bemus Point), Sarah Elder (Cassadaga) and Madeline Wadsworth (Falconer). There were also four additional $100 award winners: Elizabeth Schrecengost (Dewittville), Megan Lockwood (Jamestown), Madison Sischo (Sinclairville) and Alexandria Daniels (Bemus Point).
The Dwyer Scholarship is funded through private donations and a fundraiser that is held in June of every year. This year the scholarship fund raised more than $4,000 during the annual fundraising event that was held at the John W. Dill American Legion Post 434 in Brocton on June 24. Supporters from Jamestown Plastics and Montes Small Engine Repair donated the grand prizes.
In 2024, there will be two $1,000 scholarships as well as four $500 awards. Any Chautauqua County resident pursuing a degree in the medical or mental health field is encouraged to apply. Proof of acceptance and/or a copy of the last semester transcripts are required.
Applications will be available Jan. 15 and can be downloaded from www.faceboom.com/DwyerChautauqua. More information is available at dwyerchautauqua.com.
