VFW announces student essay, art contests

The Department of New York Veterans of Foreign Wars announces their scholarship program.

The 2023-2024 Voice of Democracy is a three- to five-minute audio essay contest. The theme is "What are the greatest attributes of our Democracy." Open to grades nine to 12 including private and homeschooled students. Must be a resident of the state where you are applying. Deadline must be received at the post/auxiliary by midnight Oct. 31 for judging.

The 2023-24 Patriots Pen essay the theme is "How are you inspired by America" a 300- to 400-word written essay is open to grades six to eight including private and homeschooled students. Must be a resident of the state they are applying. Deadline is Oct. 31.

Continuing education scholarship is open to any VFW auxiliary member who has been a member of the auxiliary for at least a year, their spouse, son, daughter with financial need. Must be 21 by Feb 15. The scholarship is $1,250 and is awarded to one winner in the four conferences. Applications must be at the national headquarters by that date.

Young American creative patriotic art and 3-D dimensional creative patriotic art contest for grades nine to 12. Entries will be judged on patriotic theme, creativity, and technique. One department winner will be forward to nationals.

For the younger students illustrating America is open to grades kindergarten to eight who are enrolled in public, private, or parochial or home study in the United States. Entries will be judged on patriotic theme and technique, be graded kindergarten to grade two, third to fifth and sixth to eighth. Must be received by the auxiliary by March 31.

Scrapbook contest can be completed by a class or a student and should be patriotic theme. This should include an American flag, parades, holidays, veterans and or branches of the military, opened to kindergarten, grades one and two. An index card to be attached to the back of the work with name age, grade.

Poster/collage contest open to grades three to five. A patriotic theme, holidays, veterans. An index card with name grade, phone number and school to be included. The youth programs must be in auxiliary hands by February to be judged and taken to the department for judging. Winners will be announced in all programs.
