Class notes 60-year reunion
The first class of baby-boomers to graduate from Westfield Academy and Central School held their 60th reunion on Alumni Weekend, July 12, 13 and 14. The class has gathered every five years since 1964. From a class of 73, 70% remain all over the United States and 27% were able to attend. With spouses we managed to gather 40 people. We are blessed with a very active group, most of whom have known each other since kindergarten. We are more a family than merely classmates. Some attended kindergarten in the old elementary school on Main Street. But, in the next few years, we were distributed to various temporary locations around town because of lack of space. We were the first class (third grade) to move into the brand-new school in the spring of 1955 before it was completed. The official opening of the new school was the fall of 1955. Folks traveled from all parts of the country for the reunion. A 150-page book "WACS 60 Year Reunion," is available on Amazon, which describes much of our history and accomplishments over the last 78 years. The weekend was loaded with activities including Westfield's amazing Friday night, informal gatherings at Grace and Abe's and Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing. Westfield had so much to do on the weekend, but one highlight for us was the bell ringing in Moore Park for the WACS classmates and teachers who have passed. It was a long list, but we remembered many. The main event was dinner at Brazill's, after which we gathered at the Lincoln-Bedel Statues for our class picture. Don Sottile, the artist who created the statues, is a member of the class.
