Bud n’ Bloom efforts brighten area
Bud ‘n Bloom Garden Club continued its yearly tradition of planting flowers at the Dunkirk Lighthouse in May. The Lighthouse offers daily tours throughout the summer months. See the website for hours and fees.
The Bud ‘n Bloom Garden Club held its annual spring banquet in May in the luxurious dining room of the newly reopened White Inn in Fredonia. In keeping with the spring gardening theme, the White Inn gardeners had added groupings of bright blue salvia to their front landscaping.
The banquet tables were accented with tiny vases of white, powdery babies’ breath flowers. Chairperson Karen Ryder used an antique tin container filled with fuschia and white rubena flowers for the springtime centerpiece. Accenting each place setting was an adorable pink-flowered teapot, topped with a delicate white ribbon and filled with sweet confections for each member.
Gracing the dining room walls (appropriately for the club festivities} were art renderings of more flowers so that members felt surrounded by springtime.
After ordering off the menu, Ryder had ordered a delightful, moist, delicious lemon layer cake slice for each guest. The ladies were delighted to be together again after many had enjoyed “snowbird” experiences in warmer climates. Dressed in flowery/springtime ensembles, the room was filled with hugs and smiles.
Co-president, Nancy Kohler held a brief meeting. Chairlady Barb Joy announced that the annual planting of flowers at the Dunkirk Lighthouse by the club would take place on Monday, May 19. After, a “Trunk and Junk” plant exchange would take place. This event helps members to add new specimens to their gardens and also supplies an avenue to share plants that need dividing. An ice cream social was held after the event.
Treasurer Sue Drag gave a financial report of the Club.
Secretary Sally Newell supplied copies of member lists and the 2025 list of events planned monthly.
Officers graciously accepted another term.
Co-president Judy Wilcox will host the June meeting, entitled “European Gardens” from her recent vacations abroad.
On July 16, Linda Bradigan will share her Sixth Street gardens in Dunkirk. An avid gardener, Bradigan has shared her amazing gardens in the past. Members are excited to return to more of her creations.
In August, members will have another opportunity to refresh their talented skills at arranging fall/dried flowers at the relaxing backyard garden patio of Brocton’s Marie Zambotti. Her amazing gardens serve as a backdrop for a wonderful summer experience. Afterwards, the bouquets will be donated to area public facilities. Angeline Smith Leone is in charge of making a list of possible recipients. Assisting her by designing Bud ‘ Bloom gift cards is Sue Alonge. Members will help deliver these creations.
