It was the perfect July morning for the Bud ‘n Bloom Garden Club to visit two hidden gems in the city of Dunkirk.
The group first visited the gardens of Linda Bradigan, followed by a tour of Kathy and Dan Uszackis’ serene sanctuary.
The garden owners, members of Revitalize Dunkirk, opened their gardens as a fundraiser for Revitalize Dunkirk’s 2025 Fundraising Campaign. An explanation of Revitalize Dunkirk projects and accomplishments of volunteers were described. Although small grants have been granted, it is the donations from businesses, social clubs, and many, many, individuals that make it possible to continue the work of a small group of volunteers for the not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization.
Bradigan shared the process of taking her property from “fixer-upper” to a “groomed” front yard and whimsical backyard.
The gardens, deck, patio, pergola, fence and shed are decorated with flea market, thrift store and yard sale finds as well as items from the homestead, including rocks from Walnut Creek. There are items of interest to be found in any direction one looks, as well as some stunning perennials and artfully placed annuals, many with a story shared.

The Uszackis’ backyard gem features a large screened-in porch overlooking a paved area with garden paths leading to a goldfish pond, many unusual mature specimen trees and plants, and then further into the back lawn area.
There a winding path leads past a variety of blooming hydrangea and around the perfectly edged lawn. Daylilies and other plants line the back fence along with two perfectly placed vintage Adirondack chairs.
It is a serene, quiet, peaceful and beautiful area guaranteed to bring down your blood pressure.
As volunteers for the Beautification Committee of Revitalize Dunkirk, the Uszackis and Bradigan appreciated the donations from Bud ‘n Bloom Garden Club and other attendees. More information can be found at facebook.com/revitalizedunkirk.
