Healing with horses — Embracing ‘responsibility’: There are common traits between Mr. Fred and Mr. Ed

No fear of the big horse; the bond is already there.
- No fear of the big horse; the bond is already there.
- The horse is very calm and ready to engage as her rider puts her in crossties to prep for riding
- If a horse can lie down to nap in its stall, he is feeling very safe, (and probably exhausted from being out with the herd all night!) “Just a quick nap just before the kids get here for my massage and our ride.” The atmosphere at the barn is calm and welcoming.
Mr. Rogers was well known for his consistent and loving ways in which he taught and communicated with children. He always showed kindness first with a gentleness that created warmth and welcomed friendship. Feelings were acknowledged and managed with understanding and compassion. Safe havens were shared. Explanations were in simple language without omitting necessary details, often in small steps.
He gave children time to respond or formulate questions, and if needed helped them to express their needs with great patience. He embraced diversity and taught acceptance of all individuals, regardless of differences. Children were praised for effort and allowed to progress at their own rate.
How similar are these traits to what is found at Centaur Stride with our therapy horses and our instructors.
Parenting is difficult. The diversity among siblings proves that outcomes can be very different even with the same base techniques. What works for one may not work for another.

The one constant is that the human body is amazing, with the brain piloting it. In our quest for knowledge as a species, we have found a pathway to bypass our abilities to think for ourselves. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Two decades ago, the consensus was to get everyone connected to the internet. Now it is to disconnect or try to limit screen time. Addiction is real for everyone.
Mental health is at a critical place and physical health is largely dependent on pharmaceuticals or natural remedies marketed without a patent. Special needs now include a much greater population than those with congenital cognitive or physical disabilities. The number of children on the Autism Spectrum is increasing at an alarming rate.
The healing power of horses is now needed by an ever growing population. The negative effects of social media, gaming addictions and sedentary lifestyles, especially for children, have taken a toll on brain development, efficiency and wellness. It’s not so easy to say “It’s not my child” anymore.
Therapeutic horseback riding programs are bridges — between struggle and strength, isolation and connection, fear and confidence. Programs offer riders the chance to experience independence in a way that feels empowering, especially on top of or next to a 1,000-pound animal.

With community support, these bridges remain strong. It becomes a place where limitations are gently pushed aside and potential takes center stage.
One volunteer described it simply: “I thought I was coming here to help someone else, but when I left, I knew I had been enlightened.”
We are so grateful for all the community support we have received. The need is real. Please join our list of heroes. Donations and volunteering remain an integral part of our success.
