Alcohol at play in one-car crash in Carroll

CARROLL – Alcohol played a part in a one-car crash in the town of Carroll Friday night that left two 16-year-olds with minor injuries.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Timothy Stappenbeck, of Frewsburg, was driving his vehicle north on Scott Road shortly after 10 p.m. and failed to slow down for a curve. Stappenbeck lost control of the vehicle and crossed over the southbound lane. He struck a tree off the west side of the roadway.

Stappenbeck and his passenger, Tyler Smith, of Jamestown, were treated at the scene by the Frewsburg and Kiantone Fire Departments. The two teenagers were transported to WCA Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies on the scene found that Stappenbeck had consumed alcohol before operating the vehicle. Being under 21 years of age, he was therefore in violation of the Zero Tolerance Law. Stappenbeck was also charged with failure to reduce speed on a curve, failure to keep right, and operating out of class for driving after 9 p.m. on a class DJ license. He may face administrative action at a Department of Motor Vehicles hearing pending the outcome of a chemical blood test.

Stappenbeck will answer the traffic tickets in Carroll Town Court on a later date. No charges were filed for Smith, the passenger of the vehicle.
