Man leads police on vehicle chase, fights officers

GOWANDA — An Olean man led police on a chase in Gowanda and fought them after his arrest.

The Aug. 28 incident started when a Gowanda Police Department patrol noticed William S. Larkin, 29, driving erratically and speeding. The patrol tried to stop Larkin’s vehicle but he fled, ignoring a stop sign and driving about a mile north on Route 438. He then pulled into a driveway and fled the vehicle, but police officers captured him after a short foot chase.

Larkin was belligerent with officers during his arrest, physically fighting them. Police observed he was showing signs of intoxication. When placed in a patrol vehicle, he kicked the rear window and door, causing damage. Officers also observed open containers of liquor and beer in Larkin’s vehicle, but he refused to take alcohol breath tests.

A computer check of records indicated Larkin had an expired driver’s permit that was also suspended for failure to appear in town of Collins court for a traffic summons. In addition, the check showed Larkin had warrants for his arrest from town of Collins court for a petit larceny in Gowanda and from Cattaraugus County Court for harassment.

He faces charges for failure to keep right, stop sign violation, speed not reasonable and prudent, reckless operation, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, driving while intoxicated, refusal to take a breath test, open containers of alcohol in a vehicle, aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree, unlicensed operation, resisting arrest, criminal mischief in the second degree and warrant arrests. Larkin was arraigned in town of Collins Court and sent to Erie County Holding Center in lieu of bail.

The Erie County Sheriff Department assisted in the incident and arrest.
