Man in stable condition following domestic incident

LAKEWOOD — A Lakewood man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound was in serious, but stable condition in a Pittsburgh, Pa., hospital following a domestic incident Monday evening.

Officers with the Lakewood-Busti Police Department were called to a West Fairmount Avenue property around 8:20 p.m. for a report of a man dragging a woman around a yard.

Chief John Bentley said several passersby witnessed the incident and attempted to aid the woman. The victim, Bentley said, was able to get away and ran to a neighbor’s home.

“She managed to pull away,” he said. “This has apparently been an ongoing domestic situation.”

Officers arrived to find the man holding a handgun. Bentley said the man fired one round into the ground before shooting himself.

Officers immediately provided first aid until Chautauqua County EMS and members of the Lakewood Fire Department arrived.

“This all happened within two to three minutes — from the time we were called to the shooting,” Bentley said. “The officers were able to give first aid and they immediately rendered assistance.”

The man was flown Monday evening to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., and later taken to Pittsburgh. As of Tuesday morning, Bentley said, the man remained in stable condition.

Charges are pending an investigation.
