The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a serious car crash that closed a portion of Interstate 86 for about an hour and a half Wednesday afternoon.

First responders were summoned to the eastbound lane, near Salamanca, around 1 p.m. Few details regarding the crash were immediately available, however, two medical helicopters were called and landed near the crash site on the interstate. The status of those injured in the crash was not known.

The lane was closed from exit 15 at School House Road to exit 20 at Salamanca until about 2:30 p.m. Investigators remained on scene afterward for several hours.

Local firefighters, as well as Cattaraugus County sheriff’s deputies and Seneca Nation police, also responded Wednesday.
