Sherman man injured in lawn tractor accident

MAYVILLE — A Sherman man was injured after an accident with a lawn tractor.

At about 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of West Marvin and Valley streets. Upon arrival it was found James A. Eastham, 47, was operating a lawn tractor and lost control, causing it to crash in the road. Eastham sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident and was flown from the scene by MedVac to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., for his injuries.

This incident is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and further information will follow once available. Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Mayville Fire Department, and Chautauqua County EMS.

¯ ASHVILLE — A single-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon seriously injured a Panama man.

At 3:04 p.m., the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident on Route 474 between Maple and Church streets. An investigation into the crash, found the operator of the vehicle lost control for an unknown reason, exited the road, struck several large boulders, crossed over a ditch and came to rest.

As a result of the collision, the operator, Ron Johnson, 44, of Ashville was transported to UPMC Chautauqua for apparent minor injuries. The passenger in the vehicle, Walter Abbott, 65, was airlifted to UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa., with serious injuries.

At this time the investigation is ongoing. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by Lakewood-Busti Police Department, Chautauqua County EMS, Ashville Volunteer Fire Department, Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department and Panama Volunteer Fire Department.

¯ ASHVILLE — Two residents were able to escape a fire on Hoag Road on Friday that was caused by an electrical issue.

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Fire Investigation Team said they responded to assist in determining the cause and origin of a residential blaze.

Investigators determined the fire originated within a second-floor wall. No one was injured.

¯ IRVING — At about 2:42 a.m. Sunday, a deputy of the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Routes 5 and 20 for an observed infraction. The operator of the vehicle was identified as 21-year-old Chase T. Scanlan of Irving.

A check of Scanlan’s driving record revealed he was operating with a suspended license. Upon further investigation Scanlan was also found to have been driving while intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested and transported the Sheriff’s Office Hanover substation.

He was charged with DWI Per Se, DWI Common Law, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and speed in zone.

Scanlan was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the town of Hanover Court at a later date.
