MAN CHARGED AFTER

DIGGING UP TIME CAPSULE

GERRY — Deputies were notified of a man digging up the Town of Gerry’s time capsule without permission. Deputies on scene found that 69-year-old Dennis R Torrey of Jamestown had unlawfully dug up the time capsule damaging the concrete that encased it. Torrey was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and was released with an appearance ticket with orders to appear in the Town of Gerry Court at a later date.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

— ELLERY — A Pittsburgh resident is facing charges after nearly striking a patrol car going in the wrong direction.

At around 10:53 p.m. Friday, deputies observed a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of Interstate 86. After nearly striking the sheriff’s deputy’s patrol vehicle, the vehicle continued eastbound in the wrong lane. Deputies, with the assistance of the New York State Police and Ellicott Police Department were able to stop the vehicle. The operator of the vehicle was identified as Voris M. Posset, 71. Through an investigation, Posset was found to be in unlawful possession of three loaded firearms.

Posset was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment.

Posset was transported to the Chautauqua County Jail to be arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Program.

— Around 1:22 a.m. Sunday, patrol was assisted by Fredonia Police after a vehicle and traffic violation on Bennett Road in Pomfret was observed.

The vehicle was stopped and the operator was identified as Roselia Vega, 50, of Dunkirk. Following an investigation it was determined that Vega was driving while intoxicated. She was transported to the Pomfret substation where she was processed and found to have a BAC over twice the legal limit.

Vega was charged with no tail lights on a motor vehicle, DWI, and aggravated DWI.

— SILVER CREEK — Deputies were dispatched to an address for a report of criminal mischief at 9:36 a.m. Sunday. Upon investigation, it was found that 23-year-old Dennis J Schaff was charged. He was transported to county jail.

JAMESTOWN POLICE DEPARTMENT

— At around 8:20 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a suspicious person complaint in the area of McKinley Avenue and Terrace Place. Upon arrival, officers located 36-year-old Carl R. Vergith. A subsequent investigation determined that Vergith was in possession of an ATV that had been previously reported stolen from an Ashville address.

Vergith was taken into custody and transported to the Jamestown City Jail on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property. He was held pending arraignment.
