CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY COURT
– Eric Vangiesen, age 38, of Jamestown, was sentenced Monday by County Court Judge David Foley to a determinate sentence in state prison for 5.5 years with 2 years of post-release supervision after being convicted of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and a violation of probation, this sentenced is to run concurrently to each other.
Vangiesen was sentenced to a five-year term of probation after being convicted of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance in April 2023.
In September 2023, the Chautauqua County Office of Probation filed a violation of probation on Vangiesen for failing to comply with multiple terms of his probation. While being prosecuted for the violation of probation, Vangiesen was indicted and arraigned on the charge of first-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a class A-II felony, in April 2024. In June 2024, Vangiesen, pled guilty to the lesser charge of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and the violation of probation.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
– HANOVER – Scott McMahon, no age or address listed, was charged with third-degree menacing, second-degree endangerment and second-degree harassment.
On July 30, a little before 3 a.m. deputies responded to an in-progress incident at the Route 20 bridge connecting Chautauqua County and Erie County in the town of Hanover. It is alleged that McMahon put another party in fear as he recklessly engaged in conduct that created a substantial risk of serious physical injury and threatened to cause physical harm to the party.
He was taken into custody and transported to the Chautauqua County Jail. McMahon will return to the town of Hanover court at a later date.
– CHARLOTTE – Michael P. Austin, 43, of Sinclairville was charged with criminal obstruction of breathing.
On July 31 around 3:45 p.m. Deputies responded to a report of an altercation on Rt. 60 in the Town of Charlotte. It is alleged that Austin prevented the breathing of another individual.
He was later arrested and transported to the county jail.
Arrest made in high speed chase
An out-of-state resident has been charged following a high speed chase in Northern Chautauqua County.
According to the county Sheriff’s Office, on Monday around 9:30 a.m. deputies were alerted to a report of a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed and illegally passing other vehicles on Rt. 20 in the town of Sheridan. The vehicle in question was located by deputies in Silver Creek who attempted to stop the driver, later identified as Yubislando Rivas Rivas, 33, of Ames, Iowa for traffic violations.
Rivas Rivas allegedly failed to comply and led deputies on a brief high speed pursuit on Rts 5 and 20 in Irving.
After terminating the pursuit, Rivas Rivas was later located by the town of Hamburg Police Department and was taken into custody.
Rivas Rivas was charged with third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and numerous other traffic violations.
Rivas Rivas was released with appearance tickets and is set to appear in the town of Hanover court at a later date and time.
Fight leads
to stabbing in city
A stabbing late Sunday night led to minor injuries for a male victim.
Dunkirk Police responded to the incident the took place at 10:45 p.m. on the 100 block of Townsend Street during a reported fight. While on location, officers discovered the injured male victim.
The victim was uncooperative with officers and was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital by Dunkirk Fire Department for minor injuries.
