JAMESTOWN – Managing pests in enclosed greenhouse and high tunnel structures can be challenging, but these upcoming programs can help growers of all sizes. Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer practical lessons and tips you can use to better manage pests. DEC pesticide recertification credits (1 credit per one hour session) will be given in Categories 1A, 3A, 10, 23, 24. Only participants viewing the live sessions at an extension office will qualify for pesticide recertification credits. Each session can be viewed independently.

To sign up to attend a webinar, call CCE-Chautauqua County, Virginia Carlberg at 664-9502 extension 202 at least two days prior to each webinar date. Webinars will be offered at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown. Plan on arriving at 1:45 p.m. so that you can sign in and get settled prior to the 2 p.m. start time. CCE reserves the right to cancel the webinar offering due to lack of registrations.

The schedule for January and February is as follows: Thursday, 2 p.m. Insect and Disease Monitoring: Yellow Sticky Cards; Where to find Thrips on plants; Early signs of Disease; Where to check first. Jan. 14, 2 p.m. Using Biological Control I: Transitioning to biocontrol; White Fly; Fungus gnats. Feb. 4, 2 p.m. Using Biological Control II: Disease biocontrol strategy; Biocontrol viability checks; Thrips.

This project was initiated because in greenhouses, pesticide resistance can lead to over-use of pesticides, as well as a reduction in yields and crop quality due to poor pest control. The topic of pesticide resistance management can be complex; this interactive webinar series will help provide the information greenhouse growers can use to manage pesticide resistance.
