SINCLAIRVILLE — With recovery efforts still underway in Puerto Rico seven months after experiencing its worst natural disaster on record, one area business was honored to be a part of the process.

Great Lakes Tree Services of Sinclairville recently had an opportunity to send some of its employees to Puerto Rico to aid in the nation’s recovery from the damage inflicted by Hurricane Maria in September.

By networking with another disaster relief company known as H2 Recovery, six Great Lakes employees were able to assist with the tree trimming in order to make travel safe along public roads and highways.

“The experience for the Great Lakes Tree Services employees was exciting, interesting and rewarding to be part of,” said Kevin Covey, Great Lakes’ operations manager.

Covey said the employees were deployed from Feb. 12 to March 16, and the overall process included mobilizing equipment to Jacksonville, Fla., before barging the large equipment furthermore to Puerto Rico. Upon arrival to the island workers traveled via airlines to pickup equipment to mobilize once again to the designated work areas. Crews were set up with prime contractors and dispatched to areas in need of attention.

“Workers greeted warm weather compared to cold conditions left behind in Western New York,” Covey said. “Our duration was approximately 30 days, with some additional days to demobilize equipment back to the home base location in Sinclairville. The employees came home to an abundance of work caused by heavy snowfall and high winds in the local area.”

Great Lakes Tree Services is located at 5540 Fenner Road in Sinclairville. Established in 1991, it is a family-run, 24/7 emergency tree care company specializing in difficult tree care projects for both residential and municipal clients.
