A new mammography system at Brooks-TLC Hospital has already seen its first patients. The Hologic 3D Genius A.I. Mammography System is the most up-to-date machine that is offered at this time, and the software at Brooks rivals that of any machine in Western New York.
“The 3D unit is equipped with an additional High Definition package and artificial intelligence computer aided detection making it the most technological advanced unit in Western New York. As equipment ages at the hospital, the hospital leadership and Board of Directors are focused on replacing aging equipment with the newest technology for the community,” said Mary LaRowe, hospital president and CEO. “Ken Morris, COO, has worked diligently with our medical providers, employees, and vendors to ensure a smooth transition to this new technology.”
This technology provides the sharpest and highest resolution of 3D images, which generates images twice the tomosynthesis of a standard 3D exam. This capability, in turn, leads to a 40% reduction in false positive test results, prevents calling patients back for additional films, and can detect more invasive breast cancer.
The equipment also includes the SmartCurve paddle which uses less compression improving patient comfort. This combined with only a 3.7 second compression time has seen a 93% improved comfort level during the exam. With the faster screening times, the radiation dosage is limited and well under the MSQA (Mammography Quality of Standards Act).
Brooks-TLC Hospital is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and partners with the Cancer Services Program (CSP) to provide screening support and information. One in eight women will get breast cancer and Brooks-TLC is working to decrease that statistic.
