DFT assists 4-H during ‘UnFair’ event

Submitted Photo Shown are representatives from DFT Communications, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the youth participants in the 4-H Youth Development Program at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds. Martha Schmitt, Business Development Director for DFT Communications, Shannon Davis, Senior Account Manager with DFT Communications and Steven Hansen, Account Manager with DFT Communications along with Kate Ewer, 4-H Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension Chautauqua County were all on hand to help kick off this week’s 4-H event.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program’s “UnFair” continues today.

The youth shows were closed to the public, however the shows in the Main Arena can be viewed on the Chautauqua County 4-H Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/chautauquacounty4h thanks to wireless internet donated by DFT Communications. In the early phases of planning when it became evident the community would not be able to attend in-person, staff and volunteers brainstormed as to how they could share the shows with the community online. DFT graciously stepped in and installed wireless service to the Warren K. Brown Arena at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds.

Kate Ewer, 4-H Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County noted that, “Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to open the 4-H youth show to the public except for the Meat Animal Sale on Saturday. Thanks to DFT, the community can be a part of the livestock shows in the Warren K. Brown Arena. We are thankful for their support of our program.” Martha Schmitt, Business Development Director with DFT Communications stated, “DFT remains committed to supporting our community and especially our children. I hope that people will support this great group of kids by viewing all of their success on Facebook during the week”.

The 57th Annual 4-H Meat Animal Sale will be the only portion of the program open to in-person public participation and will take place at noon today. An estimated 55 hogs, 8 goats, 29 pairs of chickens, 14 lambs, and 13 steers will be sold by live auction to the highest bidder. The sale will be livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/chautauquacounty4h but all bidding will take place in-person.

Additional UnFair Sponsors include the Sheldon Foundation, Linnea Foundation, Holmberg Foundation, Chautauqua County Fair Association, Larry Romance and Son, Inc., Storer’s Container Service, and many individual donors.

The association is part of the national cooperative extension system, an educational partnership between County, State, and Federal governments. As New York’s land grant university Cornell administers the system in this state. Each Cornell Cooperative Extension association is an independent employer that is governed by an elected Board of Directors with general oversight from Cornell. All associations work to meet the needs of the counties in which they are located as well as state and national goals.
